A rooftop solar system is a long-term electrical asset, not a one-day purchase. That is why the cheapest solar quote can become expensive later—even when two proposals show the same system size in kW.
The difference is usually hidden in what the quotation does not explain: module and inverter models, mounting structure, cable quality, protection devices, workmanship, monitoring, warranty support and after-sales service. A low upfront price is useful only when the system is still safe, compliant, well designed and properly supported.

Why Two Solar Quotes for the Same kW Can Be Very Different
A 5 kW rooftop solar quotation tells you the system’s rated power, but it does not tell you the complete quality of the system.
Two installers may quote the same 5 kW capacity while using different:

- inverter brands, features and service networks;
- mounting-structure materials and corrosion protection;
- DC and AC cables, connectors and cable routing;

A quotation can be made cheaper by choosing lower-cost equipment or by leaving product details vague.
The problem is not that every budget component is poor. The problem is that a quote saying only “5 kW solar plant” gives you no reliable way to compare what is actually being supplied.
Ask for the exact module and inverter make, model, rated capacity, efficiency information where relevant, product warranty, performance warranty and service contact.
Also distinguish between warranties. A long module performance warranty is not the same as a product warranty, and neither automatically covers installation workmanship.
If a component fails and local support is weak, the later cost may include replacement hardware, technician visits, transport, downtime and repeated troubleshooting.
2. Cutting Corners on the Mounting Structure Can Damage More Than Panels
The mounting structure holds the solar array through years of wind, rain, heat and rooftop exposure.
A cheap quote may reduce structural cost through lighter sections, unsuitable fasteners, inadequate corrosion protection or weak anchoring. These choices can create alignment problems, water-ingress risks or unsafe loading.
Structure design should suit the roof type, local site conditions, module layout and applicable engineering requirements. Waterproofing details also matter whenever the roof surface is drilled or penetrated.
Rooftop work carries fall and electrical hazards. Structural anchoring, roof penetrations and electrical installation should be handled by qualified professionals rather than treated as DIY cost-saving areas.
3. Poor Electrical Balance-of-System Work Is a Hidden Expense
Panels and the inverter attract most of the attention, but cables, connectors, protection devices, earthing and distribution boxes are critical parts of a solar PV system.
Saving money by using unsuitable cable sizes, incompatible connectors, poor terminations or inadequate protection can result in faults, overheating, nuisance trips or difficult maintenance.

Homeowners should never open live DC connectors, isolators, inverter terminals or distribution boards to investigate a fault. Solar DC circuits can remain energised in daylight; use a qualified solar electrician or installer.
4. Bad Design Can Reduce the Energy You Actually Use
The cheapest quote may also be based on the fastest design rather than the best design for your roof.
A good installer should consider roof orientation, tilt, shading, available area, module layout, inverter sizing, string configuration and your electricity-consumption pattern.
Remember: kW is power capacity; kWh is energy generated or consumed over time. Buying a larger number of kW does not automatically guarantee better savings.
Actual solar generation and financial savings depend on factors including location, solar irradiation, shading, orientation, equipment quality, system losses, electricity tariff, consumption pattern and applicable metering rules.
A slightly cheaper system that produces less usable energy can have a higher effective cost over its life.
5. Missing After-Sales Service Can Turn Small Faults Into Long Downtime
Solar PV systems generally require limited routine intervention, but they are not maintenance-free.
Inverter alarms, communication failures, damaged cables, loose connections, water ingress, earthing issues or unexpected drops in generation may need professional attention.
Before choosing an installer, ask:
- Who responds when the inverter shows a fault?
- Is remote monitoring included?
- What is the workmanship-warranty period?
- Are site visits chargeable?
- Who handles manufacturer warranty claims?
- What happens if the original installer stops operating?
A quote with defined service responsibility may cost more upfront but can be easier to own.
6. The Cheapest Quote May Exclude Items You Will Pay for Later
Always compare the scope, not just the total.
One installer may include protections, earthing, monitoring, approvals support, scaffolding, cable routing, testing and documentation, while another may show these as exclusions or “extra as applicable”.

The lowest quote can still be the best quote if it is transparent and genuinely comparable.

Be cautious when a seller avoids model numbers, promises unusually high generation, gives guaranteed savings without reviewing your electricity bill and roof, or refuses to provide a detailed bill of materials.

The right question is not, “Which installer has the lowest price?”
Ask instead: “Which quotation gives me the safest, most suitable and most supportable system for the money?”
Compare at least a few detailed proposals line by line. Verify component models, applicable standards, warranties, protections, structure, workmanship, monitoring and service before deciding.
A well-designed rooftop solar system should deliver useful energy for many years. Saving a little on day one is not a bargain if it leads to lower generation, premature replacements, repair costs or poor support later.
Before finalising your solar installer, ask for a complete technical quotation— not just a ₹/kW number.
