Rooftop Solar Loan vs Cash in 2026: Which Is Better?

Installing rooftop solar can reduce your dependence on grid electricity, but the way you pay for the system affects its total cost and your household cash flow. In 2026, Indian omeowners can choose between paying the full amount upfront, taking a dedicated rooftop-solar loan, or combining both.

The better option is not automatically the one with the lowest monthly payment. It depends on your savings, existing debts, loan terms, expected subsidy and the realistic electricity-bill reduction from your system.

First, Understand What the Subsidy Changes

Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, eligible residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections can apply through the National Portal. The central financial assistance is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the additional 1 kW, with the total subsidy capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more.

A loan is not required to receive this subsidy. Cash buyers and borrowers can both apply, provided the system and application meet the scheme requirements. For financed systems, some banks require the subsidy to be credited to the loan account after installation and verification.

Do not treat the subsidy as an instant discount unless your vendor’s quotation and payment schedule clearly explain the process. You may need to fund the installation before the subsidy is released.

Cash Purchase: When It Makes Sense

Paying cash gives you the lowest financing cost because there is no interest. It also avoids loan documentation, credit checks, EMI commitments and possible rate changes.

Cash is usually the stronger choice when:

  • you can pay without using emergency savings;
  • you have no expensive debt that should be cleared first;
  • the payment will not disrupt near-term goals such as education, medical needs or home repairs;
  • you want the shortest possible financial payback period; and
  • you prefer a simple transaction with no lender conditions.

The main disadvantage is reduced liquidity. Solar is a long-life home asset, but money invested in it is not easily available for an emergency. A cash purchase that empties your bank balance can therefore be riskier than a sensible loan.

Solar Loan: When It Makes Sense

A rooftop-solar loan allows you to install the system without paying the entire cost upfront. This can be useful when the roof is suitable and the electricity bill is high enough to justify solar, but paying cash would place pressure on household savings.

Official bank products show that dedicated solar loans may offer financing of up to 90% of project cost and repayment periods of up to 10 years. Terms differ by lender, loan size, borrower profile and credit history. SBI and Bank of Baroda pages checked for this article list 5.75% per year for eligible loans up to ₹2 lakh and higher rates for larger loans; these are floating or lender-dependent rates and can change.

A loan may be suitable when:

  • keeping cash available is more important than avoiding all interest;
  • the EMI comfortably fits your budget even if solar savings are lower than expected;
  • you have stable income and limited existing debt;
  • the loan has low fees and reasonable prepayment terms; and
  • delaying the installation would mean continuing to pay a high electricity bill.

Never rely only on the claim that “the electricity savings will pay the EMI”. Solar generation varies with location, irradiation, roof direction, shading, module quality, inverter performance, system losses and maintenance. Bill savings also depend on your tariff, daytime consumption and the applicable metering arrangement.

A Simple 2026 Cost Example:

Assume the amount that remains to be financed after your own contribution and subsidy adjustment is ₹1,20,000. At an illustrative interest rate of 5.75% per year for five years, the EMI would be approximately ₹2,306 and the total interest would be about ₹18,361.

A cash buyer avoids that interest. A borrower effectively pays about ₹18,361 to retain ₹1,20,000 of liquidity and spread the cost over five years.

This comparison changes if the rate rises, the tenure is longer, the subsidy is delayed, or the bank applies insurance, stamp duty or other charges. Ask for a written repayment schedule rather than comparing only the advertised interest rate.

Consider a Part-Cash, Part-Loan Strategy:

For many homeowners, the most balanced option is a larger down payment with a smaller, shorter loan. This preserves some emergency cash while limiting interest.

Another approach is to take a loan for installation and make a partial prepayment after the subsidy reaches the loan account. Check the lender’s rules first. SBI and Bank of Baroda currently state no prepayment or foreclosure charge for their listed PM Surya Ghar products, but this should not be assumed for every bank.

Five Checks Before You Decide:

  1. Obtain an all-inclusive quotation. Confirm modules, inverter, structure, protection equipment, installation, metering support, taxes and after-sales service.
  2. Calculate the amount payable before subsidy. Confirm who funds the gap and when the subsidy is expected to be adjusted.
  3. Compare total repayment, not just EMI. Include interest, margin money, insurance, stamp duty and other charges.
  4. Use conservative generation and savings estimates. Your installer should explain assumptions in kWh, not only promise a percentage bill reduction.
  5. Check local metering rules. Net metering, net billing, export credit and settlement rules are governed through State Commission regulations and DISCOM procedures, so the financial outcome can vary by location.

Final Verdict:

Choose cash when you have sufficient surplus funds after protecting essential savings and you want the lowest total cost.

Choose a solar loan when paying upfront would weaken your financial safety, but the EMI remains comfortably affordable from regular income.

Choose a part-cash, part-loan approach when you want to preserve liquidity without paying interest on the full system cost.

Before signing, compare at least two vendor quotations and two loan offers using the same system capacity, subsidy assumption and repayment period. A site-specific generation estimate and a complete financing calculation will give you a far better answer than a generic “cash is best” or “EMI pays itself” claim.
