Installing rooftop solar is a long-term decision. Panels may remain on your roof for decades, but system performance and reliability depend heavily on the quality of the design, installation and after-sales support.

For Indian homeowners, choosing the right solar installer means looking beyond the lowest quotation. A good installer should assess your roof and electricity use, recommend an appropriate system size, explain approvals and metering, follow sound safety practices and remain available after commissioning.

Here is a practical checklist to use before you sign a contract.

1. Insist on a Proper Site Survey

Be cautious if an installer gives a final design only from your electricity bill or a phone conversation.

A site survey should consider usable roof area, roof condition, orientation, shading, safe access, inverter location, cable routing, existing electrical distribution and the electricity-meter location.

Shading matters because a roof can have enough physical space yet still produce less energy than expected if trees, tanks, parapets or nearby buildings block sunlight.

Ask the installer to explain why the proposed layout suits your home.

2. Check Whether the System Size Makes Sense

A trustworthy installer should not automatically recommend the largest system that fits on your roof.

Sizing should consider your electricity consumption, daytime usage, roof area, sanctioned load, future loads and applicable DISCOM rules.

Remember: kW measures power capacity, while kWh measures energy. A 5 kW solar plant describes rated system capacity; your electricity bill generally records consumption in kWh.

Ask for the assumptions behind the proposed capacity and generation estimate. Actual output varies with location, irradiation, orientation, shading, weather, module temperature, equipment efficiency and system losses.

3. Verify the Installer for Government-Scheme Work

If you plan to use PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, use the official portal and verify the current vendor and application requirements for your connection and DISCOM.

As of August 2026, the scheme remains active with a target extending through FY 2026–27. MNRE has also issued a vendor-rating framework. Official registration or rating can be a useful screening check, but it should not replace your own evaluation of design quality, equipment, workmanship and service.

Because scheme procedures can change, confirm the latest requirements before making payment.

4. Ask for Exact Module and Inverter Models

Do not accept vague descriptions such as “Tier-1 panel” or “premium inverter”.

The quotation should identify the module manufacturer, model, wattage and quantity; inverter make, model and capacity; mounting structure; cables and connectors; protection equipment; and monitoring system.

For equipment covered by Indian quality-control requirements, verify applicable BIS requirements and any scheme-specific equipment conditions. BIS lists solar PV modules and photovoltaic power converters under relevant Indian standards and compulsory-registration requirements.

If a subsidy applies, confirm any additional eligibility or domestic-content conditions separately.

5. Examine Safety and Engineering Details

Rooftop solar is electrical infrastructure, not simply panels fixed to a roof.

Ask how the installer will address structural anchoring, waterproofing, earthing, AC and DC isolation, surge protection, cable protection, connector compatibility and lightning protection where required.

Grid-connected inverters must also provide appropriate anti-islanding protection so the system does not continue energising the grid during an outage. BIS publishes the relevant Indian standard for testing anti-islanding measures in utility-interconnected PV inverters.

Do not open live inverter panels, isolators or distribution boards yourself. Inspection and corrective electrical work should be handled by qualified personnel.

The cheapest quote can become expensive if important items later appear as extras.

The installer should separately state its workmanship warranty and explain responsibility for installation-related faults. Also ask who handles manufacturer claims, labour, transport and site visits.

8. Check Track Record and After-Sales Support

Ask for examples of completed residential projects similar to yours, preferably in the same city or DISCOM area.

Useful questions include:

  • Who performs the installation: employees or subcontractors?
  • Who is my service contact after commissioning?
  • How are faults reported and handled?
  • Can I speak with recent residential customers?

References are especially useful for judging workmanship and response after the final payment.

9. Be Careful With Savings Promises

No installer can promise identical monthly generation or bill savings for every home.

A credible proposal should explain its assumptions. Actual generation depends on irradiation, weather, orientation, shading, equipment quality, temperature, maintenance and system losses.

Savings also depend on your electricity tariff, self-consumption, grid import and export, and the billing or metering rules applicable to your DISCOM.

Treat unusually precise savings claims without supporting assumptions as a warning sign.

10. Read the Contract Before Paying

Before making a large advance, ensure the written agreement identifies equipment, project scope, total price, taxes, payment milestones, responsibilities, warranty terms and exclusions.

Confirm who handles applications, inspections, documentation and commissioning. Keep copies of quotations, invoices, equipment serial numbers, datasheets, warranties and approval records.

Do not rely only on verbal promises.

Before choosing a solar installer, confirm that:

  1. Your roof has been properly surveyed.
